New Tales of the Great Wall

ill was an 8 year old boy. He liked dreaming and travelling, and he was very kind. One summer,
he went to Beijing to see the spectacular Great Wall. He was deeply attracted by it and wondered
how the Great Wall was built a long time ago in Qin Dynasty, because there were no engines or
machines at that time. He wished he could travel back to the Qin Dynasty to see how people built
the amazing Great Wall.

One day Will saw some big boys bullying a little boy in a park. He helped the little boy and they became
good friends. This little boy was an alien who happened to travel to Earth. Will could not believe his ears when
his alien friend said he could take Will to anytime, anywhere he want with his time machine. “I want to go back
to Qin Dynasty to see people building the Great Wall!” said Will excitedly. They hopped onto the time machine
and traveled to Qin Dynasty in just a few minutes.
When they arrived, Will saw a lot of people working together to build a wall. It did not look like the Great
Wall he saw before, but he knew it was the earliest Great Wall. The Qin people were very smart and
hardworking, and they made everything by hand. To Will’s surprise, the Qin people were not happy because
they didn’t have enough food and clothes. There were also some soldiers there, forcing people to work day and
night. Some people even died because the work was dangerous and lacked protection. Will and the alien were
very angry. They knew it was Emperor Qin Shi Huang who ordered people to build the Great Wall, so they went
to see Qin Shi Huang and asked him to stop forcing people. Qin Shi Huang became furious and ordered the
soldiers to kill the two boys. As the soldiers grabbed him, Will remembered a legend he read. “I bet if you don’t
treat your people nicely, bad things will happen and the Great Wall will collapse!” Will shouted anxiously.
“
That’s ridiculous!” howled the Emperor, “But I will wait utill tomorrow. If the Great Wall does not collapse, I
will kill you then.”
The next day, people woke up to see the wall collapsed, and heard a woman crying. This woman was called
Meng Jiang Nyu. Her husband died in the dangerous building work so she had been crying for the whole night
and then the wall collapsed. Qin Shi Huang was very shocked and scared. He set Will and his friend free
immediately. “If we don’t build the wall, enemies will come to our city and attack. What should I do?” asked
Qin Shi Huang. “Be nice to your people, they will help you and build the wall happily.” Will said. Qin Shi
Huang listened to him and got the legend of the Great Wall a happy ending.
